ABOUT MARK

WDIHS_26973.jpg

The year I was in 5th grade was the centennial of the Statue of Liberty. My school held a contest to commemorate the event; students could paint a picture of the statue, or write an essay about the statue . . . there were several options, and one of them was to write a song. Awards were to be given in each category.

One of the girls in my class announced that she was going to write a song, because no one else would, so she would automatically win the prize in that category. I didn't think that was quite sporting, so I decided also to write a song, and I won!

More than the ribbon or certificate or whatever it was I won, what I discovered was that I liked writing songs. "Lady Liberty" was the first of many – and I've (thankfully) gotten better at it since then.

Later, while a freshman in high school, I was cast as Harry Beaton in "Brigadoon." It was my first exposure to musical theater and I fell hard for it – and in the process found a medium for which to write those songs (I did not take a shine to sword dancing; I accidentally kicked one of the swords into the orchestra pit, narrowly missing the cellist).

Here, you'll find information on shows that I've written. You'll also find examples of costumes I've designed for shows, which has become quite a rewarding side-hustle.

Welcome!
